Kyle Hendricks had another one of those nights. In fact, his entire September is looking mighty fine for the Chicago Cubs.
On Friday night, the veteran righty pitched eight shutout innings. After allowing a one-out single in the second inning, he set down 19 of the next 20 hitters he faced.
The pitching performance by Hendricks, and reliever Jeremy Jeffress, was especially necessary because Twins pitcher, former Cub, Rich Hill pitched seven super innings and the Cubs could only come up one run against him.
Willson Contreras got the RBI and added to his defensive exploits when he caught Jake Cave trying to steal.
The Cubs playoff magic number is now 2.
On Saturday, Alec Mills returns to the mound for the Cubs for the first time since his no-hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.
Over his last two starts Mills has 15 shutout innings. He’ll face veteran Michael Pineda who was tagged a bit in his last start. He gave up three runs in 4 2/3 innings.
