The Chicago Cubs late game heroics continued for the second consecutive night against the Cleveland Indians. On Tuesday, the Cubs loaded the bases and scored the winning run on a hit-by-pitch in the 9th inning. Wednesday, it was Javy Baez with the hit – a base hit with the bags jammed – to win 3-2 in the 10th inning.
“When you get these kind of late wins, the walk off type wins it just feels really good. It’s a nice momentum going into the off day.”
David Ross, Cubs Manager
The victory was largely possible because of the five shutout innings by the Cubs’ bullpen.
With the playoffs around the corner, the Cubs are feeling good about the bullpen’s 2.10 ERA over its past 20 games.
Starter Jon Lester wasn’t feeling too good. In the postgame ZOOM interview he said he did not have command of his off-speed pitches.
Maybe I was trying a little too hard tonight. There’s some things going on in my mind that led into tonight.. so maybe the effort was a little too much.
Jon Lester, Pitcher Cubs
Lester was alluding to the possibility he was pitching his last game at Wrigley Field with the entire playoffs being played in Texas and his six-year contract about to expire.
The Cubs NL Central lead is now at 5.5 games over the faltering St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Rads.
