Greatest Calvin Johnson Games

Greatest Calvin Johnson Games

Seems like the closer we get to training camp the more we can’t wait for it to start. Kyle Mallett has also been thinking that a training camp without wide receiver Calvin Johnson is going to have a different feel. Perhaps “melancholy” is a good word to describe the feeling. Mallett decided to take a look back at the greatest Calvin Johnson games to help him get over the melancholy.

Whether you are a Lions fan or not, there’s no debating that Megatron is the greatest receiver of this generation and somewhere down the line will have his name enshrined in Pro Football’s Hall of Fame. Thinking back over his illustrious career there are several games to choose from when deciding which are his top three most memorable games. Here’s my list… send in your to @LionsBarroom on twitter… or visit our Facebook page, by CLICKING HERE.

Calvin Johnson Games --- #3. Week 15, 2011 at Oakland

The Lions came into this game with a record of 8-5, on the verge of making their first playoff appearance since the 1999 season.  Down by 13 points with just over seven minutes to play, Matthew Stafford led a 71-yard drive to cut the Raiders’ lead to six.  After forcing an Oakland punt on the ensuing drive, Detroit started their final drive pinned at their own two-yard line with two minutes remaining.  Needing a miracle to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Lions drove 98 yards down the field in just seven plays. Megatron made two circus catches plus the game winning touchdown to put the Lions at 9-5 and on the cusp of a playoff spot.  Johnson finished the day with nine catches for 214 yards and two touchdowns.

Greatest Calvin Johnson Games — #2. Week 16, 2012 vs. Atlanta

After enjoying a nice comeback season the year before, the Lions as a team were dreadful in 2012. Sitting at 4-10, all Detroit had to play for was pride. Well, that and the fact that Calvin Johnson was on the verge of breaking Jerry Rice’s single-season receiving yards record.  The Lions would lose yet again, but that didn’t ruin the Detroit Faithful’s night.  Megatron proved once again that he was the NFL’s most dominant receiver, catching 11 balls for 225 yards, not only breaking Rice’s long-standing record, but becoming the first receiver in league history to record 100+ receiving yards in eight straight games.  Despite another miserable loss, the fans at Ford Field got a real treat that night.

Greatest Calvin Johnson Games — #1. Week 8, 2013 vs. Dallas

Cowboys star wide receiver Dez Bryant boldly proclaimed that he could do whatever Calvin Johnson could do.  The ensuing game between the Lions and the Cowboys would prove otherwise.  Dez had himself a nice game, catching two touchdown passes, but it was nothing compared to the clinic Megatron put on.  Johnson caught 14 passes for a whopping 329(!) yards, making circus catch after circus catch as Detroit defeated Dallas 31-30 in a last-minute thrilling victory for the home team, and Dez looked awfully silly after talking the whole week about how he was in the same class as Megatron.
