Beer Commercials – Good Ones & Bad Ones

Beer Commercials – Good Ones & Bad Ones

Beer commercials and the NFL go together like Clay Matthews and hair conditioner – they are inseparable.

Problem is the commercials suck. The quality has dipped faster than Christian Ponder’s future as an NFL QB. You youngbloods reading this need to know that years ago beer commercials during football games put your bladder to the test. There’s no way you wanted to miss out on sports greatest names bickering over whether the beer had more taste or was less filling.

Yes, there are certainly some good beer commercials out there, but the best American beer commercials are usually found in the internet because the FCC deems them too risqué for commercial TV or they are longer than 30 seconds. This campaign by Bud Light is f$#&ing great!

I’m never going to buy some of the beers they’re trying to sell me, but I am going to drink more beer. I see a commercial for a Coors lite beer and I run to the fridge and grab a Maximus. But, I get a kick in seeing what the Madison Avenue guys have come up with to sway me to drink their swill.

Sex always helps. But, they should have some creative flair and not be totally gratuitous. This one works for both sexes.

But, the truth is we’re headed for a lot of crappy beer commercials that they will play over and over again. Last year, this was my all-time nauseating beer commercial. The more it played the sicker I got.

My advice for the Mad Men is to get inspiration from European and Latin America beer commercials. Here are three good ones. The first might fall into the controversial catalog of beer commercials, but I think it’s clever and funny.

This next one, is a cunning approach to marketing beer to people who have the same qualities the brewery associates with its beer.

And, finally, again, ads with sexy women work for me just as long as they are good-natured and don’t use the Ray Rice approach to dealing with women.

Among my career highlights I have produced two films while in high school that received nationwide attention; leaned out of a helicopter over the Gulf of Suez at the age of 20 to shoot movies of oil rigs; won an Emmy award for a sports special and another for a kid's fitness show; and led a team of very talented creative professionals to produce break-through corporate communications.
